Nas and Damian Marley have recently come together to put out a collaborative album entitled Distant Relatives, combining Nas' floetic social critiques with Marley's impressive vocal presence to create an album centered around Africa's socio-political issues, with all proceeds going to a school-building project in which both musicians are involved. According to Nas,"We tryin' to build some schools in Africa with this one, and trying to build empowerment," he said. "We're tryin' to show love and stuff with this album. So, the record's … all about really the 'hood and Africa also as well."
I know, so it turns out Nas isn't exactly the ideal pitch man for such a boldly philanthropic and venerable project, but seriously, I'm impressed that despite the constant material obsession that plagues hip hop, there are still those who are actually willing to nut up and make a positive impact on society. So "Africa Must Wake Up", featuring K'naan, has both the sound, performance, and passion that make a true anthem; don't be surprised if you hear this track around the time of the World Cup next month.
